I've always been fond of the advice that one should keep an open mind, but not so open that all sense spills out.
That advice came to mind as I read about Jason Beghe, a Hollywood actor who has fled the Scientology cult.
Apparently, he got involved in the cult as a "spiritual seeker" who thought there just might be something to this whole Dianetics/Scientology thing.
Common sense should have told him a "science of mind" concocted by a non-scientist is probably worthless. Common sense should have led him away from an organization that talks about ridding the body of clusters of space aliens' souls.
No matter. Beghe, whose most recent movie is the critically slammed One Missed Call, is out now and I say "Good for him."
The coolest thing about his departure from the cult is how he's speaking up about the false promises it makes.
He says Scientology is "a rip-off" and "dangerous for your spiritual, psychological, mental, emotional health and evolution."
Beghe reached the level of OT 5 in Scientology's "Bridge to Total Freedom." That's the level where, leaked documents state, "you learn the truth about the physical universe." Not what scientists say, mind you. Rather, Scientology's "truth" is about how the universe's power harms "thetans" (Scientology-speak for souls).
At the level of OT 3, of course, Beghe learned all about how evil galactic overlord Xenu destroyed oodles and oodles of beings 75 million years ago by dumping them into volcanoes on Earth and then dumping bombs on the volcanoes. The space aliens' souls rose up and have been finding homes in Earthlings' bodies ever since.
An Australian TV show did an outstanding report on Beghe's story (below). I like how the anchor refers to "the once popular Tom Cruise."
