George Carlin was perhaps the smartest funny guy in the English-speaking world. His death is a great loss to those of us who prefer brainy comedians to twits like Dane Cook.
Obits in the mainstream news media today unsurprisingly describe Carlin's work with words like "edgy" and "irreverent" and "provocative." Offhand, I can think of a few other adjectives that are at least as apt: insightful, perceptive and passionate. He knew right from wrong, and he pointed out absurdities and injustices when he saw them.
