I just can't figure out why the news media have paid so little attention to what Gen. David Petraeus had to say Friday on Fox News about torture, the rule of law and Guantanamo Bay.
I mean, for crying out loud, the head of U.S. Central Command said this: "When we (the United States) have violated Geneva Conventions, we rightly have been criticized. And so as we move forward I think it is important to again live our values, to live the agreements that we have made in the international justice arena ..."
He acknowledged U.S. wrongdoing (specifically acts that violated the Geneva Conventions). He said it's important for his country to follow international law. He once again voiced support for the responsible closure of Gitmo.
It's not at all what the Fox News team wanted to hear, but when he went on that right-wing channel Friday he stated the obvious: The U.S. has tortured, and that's a damn shame.
This should be in newspapers across the U.S. It should have been an item in national newscasts. It's not as big as the General Motors bankruptcy, but it's important stuff for Yankees to read and hear.
Yet a Google News search (petraeus + geneva) today yielded few results that weren't blog entries. And even then, 'twas almost exclusively blogs that tilt left, when the people who most need to get the message are on the other side.
