It's not the ignorance, though it is remarkable. No, what's most striking about an Arizona state senator's repetition of the ridiculous, unsupportable idea that the Earth is 6,000 years old is the casualness with which she says it twice in a half-minute.
Canadians have their own Young-Earther pols. MP James Lunney referenced YE arguments in defence of an ignorant colleague earlier this year, and International Trade Minister Stockwell Day famously thinks humans once walked with dinosaurs.
As Richard Dawkins has noted, saying the planet is 6,000 years old is like saying North America is eight yards wide.

How did she get into government?
Appointed. We'll have to wait and see whether she seeks re-election, and whether AZ voters are stupid enough to elect her.
AZ voters are that stupid. Look at their senators.
