John McCain is a war hero because his plane was shot down in North Vietnam, he was detained by the Viet Cong for 5 1/2 years, and he was tortured.
Wait - tortured? Not so fast.
Writes Andrew Sullivan: "The torture that was deployed against McCain emerges in all the various accounts. It involved sleep deprivation, the withholding of medical treatment, stress positions, long-time standing, and beating. ... According to the Bush administration's definition of torture, McCain was therefore not tortured."
I'll point out now that those aren't the words of a nutty left-winger scoring petty political points.
Andrew Sullivan is a conservative.
