"Did I really hear that?"
I uttered those words aloud yesterday while watching the daily business program on CBC News. I had just heard Kevin O'Leary say people should "burn down Parliament." Or did I?
Well, yesterday's show has been posted online and it turns out that's exactly what I heard. Starting at about 6:45 in the streaming video, here are O'Leary's exact words: "This is an outrage for the Canadian people. I expect to see torches on the streets tonight. Burn down Parliament."
All this fulmination is over a regulator's decision to deny an Egyptian-controlled company's application for a cellphone-service licence.
Some people get livid about violations of human rights; Kevin O'Leary gets his briefs in a knot over the denial of corporations' rights -- and anything he thinks is standing in the way of Canadians getting the absolute lowest prices in wireless service.
Interesting priorities.
If the issue were different, such an incendiary comment would be considered downright offensive and unpatriotic. There would be howls of protest if Judy Rebick reacted to something she perceived as unjust by saying people should burn down Parliament.
Yet I can't find any condemnation of O'Leary's remarks. Funny thing, that.

I'm pretty sure that the CRTC looks unfavourably on inciting riot or uttering seditious sentiments...
thanks for sending this along stimpson, i posted on it. cheers
WOW---is this guy a protege of Rupert Nurdoch?
GC: I like the RCMP/CSIS visit scenario that Lindsay suggests at CC better.
JJ: It's hilari-sad how O'Leary gets so riled up about infringement on the free market, isn't it? I wonder if he gets half as exercised about government foot-dragging on global warming.
