Government presents gift to landlords

"Finance Minister Greg Selinger today introduced proposed amendments to Manitoba’s Residential Tenancies Act which include provisions which would allow landlords to request a pet deposit.
"'By allowing a landlord to collect a separate pet damage deposit, we are hoping more landlords will permit pets,' said Selinger. 'The pet deposit would act as a damage deposit specific to any damage to a rental property caused by a pet.'
"Landlords in Manitoba are not required to accept pets but, if they choose to do so, they would be entitled to collect a pet damage deposit of one half month’s rent in addition to the existing security deposit."

That third paragraph in today's government news release is the key to understanding what the Manitoba government is doing. The finance minister is intent on giving landlords the right to charge an extra deposit fee on tenants with pets but imposing absolutely no requirement that landlords accept pets. It's doing this on the mere hope that more landlords will accept pets.
This is of no benefit to tenants with pets. It's a boon to landlords only.
I've posted on this topic before. I won't bother repeating here what's wrong with the government's proposal. I'm just plain sick and tired of seeing a nominally social democratic government so intent on handing a gift to the propertied class, at tenants' expense.
