News media have paid little attention to Tuesday's announcement that the Manitoba government plans to let landlords impose an extra deposit fee on tenants with cats and dogs.
What little coverage I've seen, however, leaves me feeling depressed.
On CityTV, the Winnipeg Humane Society's executive director gave the finance minister a figurative pat on the head -- which seemed to me like a retreat from the society's position of a few months ago.
At the Winnipeg Free Press's website (but, as far as I can tell, not in the newspaper itself), there's a three-paragraph brief that calls the Residential Tenancies Act amendment "the so-called 'fluffy law.'"
Well, hold on a minute.
What the finance minister wants isn't anything like Ontario's noted "Fluffy Law."
The Ontario law, named after a senior's beloved cat, nullified "no pets" clauses in leases across that province.
Manitoba's finance minister is putting forward a bill allowing landlords to continue with "no pets" policies as they wish.
See the difference? I knew you could.
As the Winnipeg Dogs blog suggests, you might want to let the finance minister know what you think at minfin@leg.gov.mb.ca.
