SUNDAY FUNNY: Old Dogs trashed

"Trashing Old Dogs is a bit like kicking a puppy. But here goes." So writes Roger Moore, film critic at the Orlando Sentinel.
The movie "is badly written and broadly acted, shamelessly manipulative and not above stopping by the toilet for a laugh or two," he declares.
He's not alone in his disdain for the new comedy starring Robin Williams and John Travolta. As I write, it has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 7%, worse than The Ugly Truth and Bride Wars.
Below are my fave funny slams on what apparently is a rather unfunny comedy.
Kyle Smith, New York Post: "Old Dogs does to the screen what old dogs do to the carpet."
Liam Lacey, The Globe and Mail: "The timing of the comic set-ups is consistently amateurish, as if scenes were edited with hedge clippers."
John Anderson, Washington Post: "We have reached a point in our moviegoing life where the two most horrifying words a studio can mutter are 'Robin' and 'Williams.' I'm sorry, it's true. Throw in 'John' and 'Travolta' and 'Saw VI' starts to sound like 'Bambi.'"

I haven't seen or watched a first run movie lately that I would be willing to pay the going rate!
It seems Hollywood is asleep at the wheel with their talent and writing.

We either get a remake or something like this now. Is Hollywood that bereft of ideas?

What Hollywood needs is a fresh approach.

Why not select a really crappy TV series, then make a movie out of it ?

What's that,Dulce? They already did that multiple times? Cartoons, maybe?

They did? Dang,where was I?

Never mind.

Ain't it funny how Hollywood cranks out crap like this and remakes or "re-imaginings" of old movies and TV shows, yet still proclaims itself a "creative" place? These people like to call themselves artists!

Okay, y'all are going think I'm being two-faced about this but yeah, Hollywood's greatest gift to American creativity would be to willingly break off the continent and slide into the ocean like it did on "2012".

I want to puke sometimes when I hear about a remake of some film. Of course we all know the reason is that a concept the public is already familiar with is a lot easier to sell than some new one that might fall on its face.

Why am I two-faced? Shoot me but I am crazy about the new Star Trek.

Sometimes the spontaneity of Robin Williams takes over projects...they say. Its either kicks or kicks in the shin? but! Funny lines Stimpson!

sooo many action movies that are really bad stories/un-plotted whatever.. yet the CGI or special effects (they get my attention) do serve to provide a therapy for our collective catastrophobia! (hi BB!)

Netflix is the answer. No gas. No parking. No popcorn. Beer. Sometimes lotza beer!

I've got a neighbourhood store that rents out movies for $1, and a few cheap cinemas in town. That's just about all I need.

BTW, if you ever find yourself renting Make It Happen, watch for me at 12 1/2 minutes in, closing a laptop and walking out of a diner. That's my personal moment of movie stardom, or as close as I'll get to movie stardom.

I may be renting that flick! I'm sure you're worth $3. Question is, shall I put it back in the Netflix sleeve as soon as I see you, or shall I watch the balance of the movie?

Call me silly, but I watch movies with Robin Williams and John Travolta when I want to escape reality..like I do EVERYTIME I WATCH A MOVIE. I laughed my ass off through the entire movie. I don't care what Roper or Bloper or anyone else says.

That being said, I did watch a movie (Netflix, thank you very much) called Food, Inc. If you haven't seen that, and you are dying for some reality...I recommend you see it.

Stimmy, I came here from Sagacious Hillbilly's blog. Good to see you! I'll be back...if I can find my way among the littered path of empty popcorn bowls and tea bags...

Well, welcome, Akannie. I do recall seeing you over at the Sagacious One's blog.
