Bigmac, I strongly recommend borrowing A People's History of the United States from your local library. It's a big book, and I didn't read all of it, but you can pick and choose from among its contents. The chapters on Columbus and the Civil War stood out for me.
He was an important historian in a country that does not value the facts, but rather a 'feel good' version that leaves out the nasty bits that really need to be taught. History repeats itself, y'know.
I've learned so much from reading Voices of a Peoples History of the United States. Zinn and his coauthor did a wonderful job of having grassroots activist tell about what they did in their own words. It really was an eye opener.
